Why asset tracking matters for London operators

Southwestern Ontario agriculture means a meaningful share of local fleets mix on-road trucks with off-road machinery, which requires tracking that handles both hour-meter and odometer logic.

London sits on the 401 between Toronto and Windsor, making it a common overnight and relay point for cross-border carriers.

Generators, light towers, containers, compressors and storage trailers move between sites on somebody else's truck, sit for months, and quietly disappear. They have no power to tap and no operator to notice. Conventional fleet tracking skips them entirely, which is exactly why they are where fleets lose the most and see the least.

Around London that plays out along Highway 401, Highway 402 to Sarnia and Veterans Memorial Parkway, and through the Innovation Park and the Wilton Grove industrial area. The fleets we work with here are concentrated in agriculture, manufacturing, construction and distribution.

What this covers

Asset Tracking on the iTrackGPS platform
The kind of assets people lose track of. Each reports in as an icon on the map, whether it moved today or has sat for a month.

What you get

Battery units with very long life

Self-contained, no wiring, reporting infrequently or only on movement.

Movement-triggered alerts

An asset that moves when it should not triggers a notification, rather than being discovered missing at the next inventory count.

Site inventory

A current list of what is genuinely on each site, which rarely matches the spreadsheet.

Configurable reporting interval

Report often on an active site or rarely in storage, trading battery life against visibility.

Geofence assignment

Assets tied to sites so departures are obvious.

Anything with a motor, and plenty without

Generators, light towers, pumps, compressors, containers, tool cribs.

What changes

There is no fixed average, but realistically an hour of payroll, a couple of gallons of fuel and one extra service call is about $200 to $300 a month for most industries. That is roughly 5 to 10 times the monthly cost, and it starts immediately rather than in six months.

How it installs

iTrackGPS hardware range: OBD-II, hardwired and battery units
The range, left to right: gateway, OBD-II plug-in, hardwired unit, wired asset trackers and a sealed battery unit.

OBD-II plug-in

Plugs into the vehicle's diagnostic port. Genuinely plug-and-play, about 30 seconds, and we can ship it directly to you or send a technician.

Best for: Light vehicles, vans and cars where you want to be running the same day.

Straight answer: It can be unplugged. There is a battery-disconnect alert if that happens, but it is not tamper-proof. If you are not confident the tool will be respected, hardwire it instead.

Hardwired install

Wired directly into the vehicle and hidden out of sight. Installed by our own mobile technicians, fully insured, who travel to you.

Best for: Any fleet where tamper resistance matters, and every heavy equipment install.

Battery-powered asset unit

Self-contained with no wiring at all, because the asset it is attached to usually has no power source.

Best for: Trailers, containers, generators, light towers and anything else you just need to confirm is still where you left it.

Straight answer: Battery life depends entirely on how often it reports. Reporting only on movement runs for a very long time; frequent reporting does not.

Pricing

No contract, ever

No contracts. Billing is month to month. Cancel any time with no penalty. The customer keeps the hardware. If we stop earning it, you fire us.

30 days to change your mind

30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not fully satisfied in the first 30 days, we buy it back, no questions asked.

The hardware is yours

Professional installation and a lifetime warranty is included, and it comes with a lifetime warranty. The hardware belongs to the customer.

Priced to what you actually need

A trailer you just need to confirm is still there does not cost the same as a truck running full fleet management. We quote the tier that fits, and volume discounts available at 10 or more vehicles.

We do not buy out existing contracts with other providers.

Equipment theft around London

Farm equipment and trailer theft across Middlesex and Elgin counties is a recurring seasonal problem.

Our position on this is simple: we would rather a machine never start than have to go and find it. On heavy equipment that means a starter immobilizer paired to an electronic key fob, so holding a master key is no longer enough to operate the machine. See how the immobilizer works in London.

Questions London fleets ask

What is worth tracking?

Practically, anything where replacement cost plus the disruption of losing it exceeds a few hundred dollars. Generators, light towers and tool cribs are common. Individual hand tools are not.

Will it survive a Canadian winter outdoors?

Yes. These are sealed units built to live outside year-round.

Is this the same as fleet management?

No, and that distinction matters for cost. Asset tracking answers whether something is still where you left it. Fleet management answers how a working resource is performing. Different tiers, different price.

Do you install in London?

Yes. Our technicians are mobile, fully insured and travel to you, and we normally have you running within a day or two depending on equipment availability. For light vehicles we can also ship an OBD-II unit that plugs in in about 30 seconds. Support is by phone Monday to Friday out of Toronto.

What it could be worth in London

Rough ROI estimate for your London fleet

Based on what we typically see: an hour of payroll, a couple of gallons of fuel and one extra service call is about $200 to $300 a month per vehicle for most industries. Move the slider to your fleet size.

$2,000 conservative monthly
$3,000 typical monthly
$24,000 conservative annual

This is an estimate, not a quote, and it assumes the tool is actually used. The savings come from payroll, overtime, fuel and additional billable hours. We would rather walk you through your real numbers on a call.
