Why heavy equipment tracking matters for Halifax operators

Atlantic fleets cover enormous territory relative to population, so a Halifax-based operation often runs single trips spanning three provinces in a day.

Burnside is the largest industrial park in Atlantic Canada, and Halifax's deep-water port anchors regional container movement.

Heavy equipment breaks every assumption built into vehicle tracking. There is no meaningful odometer, the machine may sit on one site for three weeks, and there is no diagnostic port to plug into. The questions are different too. Not where did it go, but how many hours did it actually run, and is it still there right now.

Around Halifax that plays out along Highway 102, Highway 103 and the Circumferential Highway, and through the Port of Halifax and Burnside Industrial Park. The fleets we work with here are concentrated in port and intermodal, construction, marine services and distribution.

What this covers

Heavy Equipment Tracking on the iTrackGPS platform
Telehandlers, scissor lifts and boom trucks — the machines this covers. On the live map each shows as an icon reporting run hours, position and status.

What you get

Hardwired install, always

Heavy equipment is never an OBD-II job. Our technicians wire the unit in and hide it.

True engine hours

Run time measured from actual operation, which on a machine with no meaningful odometer is the only number that counts. It drives the maintenance schedule and the rental invoice.

Tilt and charge monitoring

Tilt tells you a machine is on a slope or has been disturbed. Charge state tells you whether it will start tomorrow morning.

Fuel and oil pressure

Two of the cheapest sensors to fit and two of the most expensive problems to miss. Both cut unnecessary service calls and the work disruption that follows.

PTO and auxiliary monitoring

Time on hydraulics, pumps or lifts tracked separately from engine running time, so billable work is separated from idling.

Beacon and light control

Drive a beacon or work light from the unit, so a machine can signal status on site.

Reporting that matches the duty cycle

Every 2 to 5 minutes while the machine is running, and a heartbeat once or twice a day when idle, confirming it is still in place.

Starter immobilizer and matched fob

The starter circuit is disabled entirely. Even with the correct master key the machine will not start without the electronic fob paired to that unit.

What changes

There is no fixed average, but realistically an hour of payroll, a couple of gallons of fuel and one extra service call is about $200 to $300 a month for most industries. That is roughly 5 to 10 times the monthly cost, and it starts immediately rather than in six months.

How it installs

iTrackGPS hardware range: OBD-II, hardwired and battery units
The range, left to right: gateway, OBD-II plug-in, hardwired unit, wired asset trackers and a sealed battery unit.

OBD-II plug-in

Plugs into the vehicle's diagnostic port. Genuinely plug-and-play, about 30 seconds, and we can ship it directly to you or send a technician.

Best for: Light vehicles, vans and cars where you want to be running the same day.

Straight answer: It can be unplugged. There is a battery-disconnect alert if that happens, but it is not tamper-proof. If you are not confident the tool will be respected, hardwire it instead.

Hardwired install

Wired directly into the vehicle and hidden out of sight. Installed by our own mobile technicians, fully insured, who travel to you.

Best for: Any fleet where tamper resistance matters, and every heavy equipment install.

Battery-powered asset unit

Self-contained with no wiring at all, because the asset it is attached to usually has no power source.

Best for: Trailers, containers, generators, light towers and anything else you just need to confirm is still where you left it.

Straight answer: Battery life depends entirely on how often it reports. Reporting only on movement runs for a very long time; frequent reporting does not.

Pricing

No contract, ever

No contracts. Billing is month to month. Cancel any time with no penalty. The customer keeps the hardware. If we stop earning it, you fire us.

30 days to change your mind

30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not fully satisfied in the first 30 days, we buy it back, no questions asked.

The hardware is yours

Professional installation and a lifetime warranty is included, and it comes with a lifetime warranty. The hardware belongs to the customer.

Priced to what you actually need

A trailer you just need to confirm is still there does not cost the same as a truck running full fleet management. We quote the tier that fits, and volume discounts available at 10 or more vehicles.

We do not buy out existing contracts with other providers.

Equipment theft around Halifax

Equipment loss in the region skews toward trailers and tools rather than full machines, given limited overland export routes.

Our position on this is simple: we would rather a machine never start than have to go and find it. On heavy equipment that means a starter immobilizer paired to an electronic key fob, so holding a master key is no longer enough to operate the machine. See how the immobilizer works in Halifax.

Questions Halifax fleets ask

What equipment does this fit?

Excavators, skid steers, generators, trailers and more, across Volvo, John Deere, Komatsu, JCB, Hitachi, Liebherr, XCMG, Sany and LiuGong.

Which machines does this suit?

It is built for skyjacks, scissor lifts, telehandlers and boom trucks, and it fits excavators, skid steers, generators and trailers too. Across Volvo, John Deere, Komatsu, JCB, Hitachi, Liebherr, XCMG, Sany and LiuGong.

Everyone has the same key. Does that matter?

That is exactly the problem this solves. One key usually opens an entire class of machine, so holding a key is enough to operate anything on the yard. With the immobilizer, the machine will not start without the matched fob, regardless of what key someone has.

What does YellowGuard cost?

Heavy equipment sits on a lower tier than full fleet management, so it is one of the least expensive things on the platform to protect. There is no contract, the one-time hardware fee includes professional installation and a lifetime warranty, and the hardware is yours. Tell us how many machines you run and we will give you the number.

Do you install in Halifax?

Yes. Our technicians are mobile, fully insured and travel to you, and we normally have you running within a day or two depending on equipment availability. For light vehicles we can also ship an OBD-II unit that plugs in in about 30 seconds. Support is by phone Monday to Friday out of Toronto.

What it could be worth in Halifax

Rough ROI estimate for your Halifax fleet

Based on what we typically see: an hour of payroll, a couple of gallons of fuel and one extra service call is about $200 to $300 a month per vehicle for most industries. Move the slider to your fleet size.

$2,000 conservative monthly
$3,000 typical monthly
$24,000 conservative annual

This is an estimate, not a quote, and it assumes the tool is actually used. The savings come from payroll, overtime, fuel and additional billable hours. We would rather walk you through your real numbers on a call.
